It's Hurricane Season!

In the New York area, hurricane season starts in June and ends at the end of November. Historically, the greatest potential for hurricanes in NYC occurs in August and runs until October. Unfortunately, this year in the New York area and beyond on August 3rd, 2020 hurricane Isaias hit. We, along with our fellow Long Islanders witnessed the aftermath of Isaias firsthand. We first want to say we hope everyone is well and safe. Several areas had tons of trees down and damage to residents homes and yards. Thousands of people were without power for an extended period of time.

We want to emphasize the damage that a storm can do to your yard. Tearing down trees and eliminating fences. First of all, make sure you are always safe and stay inside during a hurricane. Keep away from windows, skylights and glass doors. Go to a safe area such as an interior room, closet or downstairs bathroom. Never go outside until you have confirmed the storm has passed. When you have confirmed the storm is over, be sure to assess any damage and try to secure any openings in your yard, especially if you have children or pets.

Here are some key steps to help avoid damage in the future to your fence. Prior to a storm coming:

  • Trim any trees near the fence line. Large branches and trees can do severe damage to your fence, trimming them can help easily avoid any fence damage.

  • Remove large yard objects. Put away patio furniture, trash containers and any other objects that could blow in the wind.

  • Check on loose posts, especially if your fence is old. Old fences tend to rot at the baseline of the fence and near the posts. Be sure to remove and rebury any posts that are starting to lift out of the ground.

  • Reinforce fences. Consider reinforcing your fence with wood, metal or concrete.

  • Lock all of your gates. High winds can slam your gate, if it is not locked properly. You also have the option to remove your gate off the hinge, if you have the time.
